Rostrum: Special “Protect Our Country” Edition!
Good afternoon and welcome to another Weekend Rostrum; the chance for you – YES YOU – dear cherished readers and co-conspirators to talk about anything that springs to mind.
Melbourne, Melbourne Melbourne.
Today I enjoyed a rather civilised lunch at a little gem of a place called “Rare Steakhouse” on Little Collins Street.
Tom would like it. With an extensive wine list of premium reds and food consisting predominantly of “steak” done a dozen ways or thereabouts, it exuded the charm and sophistication of a gentleman’s club.
And not long after my dining companions had been seated at our specially reserved table, who should wander in the door but the former champion of the World’s Greatest Economy, Peter Costello.
I thought about yelling out “Gidday Tip” but discretion became the better part of valour so I restrained myself.
Obviously Tip isn’t attending the Liberal Party conference in Brisbane. And who can blame him?
Tony Abbott is already waxing lyrical..
According to Mr Abbott, “The Federal Coalition is on the cusp of something great and will rescue the country” he declared to the party faithful in Brisbane earlier this afternoon.
“I believe that all of us in this room all of us in the Liberal and National parties around our country stand on the threshold of something great,” he said.
“We stand on the threshold of riding to the rescue of our country.”
“I stress it is not about us … It is about building a better country. We can do it. We can do it. We are a great people whose best days are in front of us, a great people held back momentarily by a bad government.
“Can’t you feel it in the streets? The Australian people are willing us to succeed.”
The carbon tax also came in for attack.
“Day 13 of the carbon tax and still the Prime Minister of this country has not been game to face up to a single small business [to discuss the impacts],” he said.
He also had a dig at Julia Gillard over “the disaster on our borders” and accused the Prime Minister of turning the Navy “into a water taxi service for people smugglers”.
“This is a government which is utterly incompetent and utterly untrustworthy,” Abbott said.
“We have a government which can execute a prime minister but which cannot execute a program … There are millions of decent Australians who regard themselves as honest Labor people who feel utterly let down by the current government.”
The Coalition’s policies to turn back asylum seeker boats have raised fears of the dangers to navy personnel, but Abbott said that Julia Gillard should have given the navy new orders to “do your job, protect our country”.
I mean we are under attack aren’t we?
Why won’t Julia protect our country?
Why does she hate us so?
